Valve brings Steam to OSX - This announcement is huge - One of the main arguments in the OSX vs PC debate just got hit out of the park - with the ability for cross platform/ cloud-based save game files and games purchased on one platform transferable to the other, as well as simultaneous title releases, this is a huge notch in the belt for apple/valve.
True, the hardcore legions of gamers who MUST have the latest graphics cards wont be swayed and the premium cost of macs will probably still influence the choice of system in netcafe’s. But to the casual gamer like me, this is great news.

It’s on like Donkey Kong.

HTC has been accused of infringing 20 patents owned by Apple that are used in the iPhone.

Apple said the patent infringements covered technology used in the iPhone interface as well as its “underlying hardware and architecture.”

HTC makes phones for many firms including Google and was behind the Nexus One handset.

In a statement Apple boss Steve Jobs said: “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it.

“We’ve decided to do something about it,” he said. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” (via BBC News - Apple sues HTC over phone patents)

Time Machine Troubles

So I have this problem where my time machine backup drive will occasionally unmount itself and time machine will just sit there for days on end without backing itself up, until I finally notice and reboot the external drive.

It strikes me as odd that there is no warning dialog , no exclamation icon in the menu bar, nothing. After 12 days or so, sometimes, Time Machine will finally twig onto the fact that it hasn’t run in a while and display an alert, but this is very inconsistent and god forbid that my computer fucks itself in the meantime. Is this problem specific only to my machine - or a pretty widespread issue?

A Panic Software internal tool which clears all the extra filesize cruft from adobe generated pdf’s.
I’ve been using it all today and have found it remarkable - often reducing my illustrator exported pdf’s to about 10% of the size.

Just launched this website for a friend’s design agency/studio, ImageMechanics. The site itself is probably one of the more technical html / css builds i’ve undertaken, making use of embedded font technology, ajax deeplinking, among many other things.

The journal section of the website is managed via tumblr, where Jase has been posting some great little articles.

This is called Facebook Connect, and it’s a very bad thing for security and user education. Teaching people to check that the URL starts with facebook.com before logging in is useless, because Facebook wants its users to log into anything that vaguely looks Facebookish, and it’s training them to do so. How is anyone expected to distinguish Facebook from a phishing site masquerading as Facebook, when Facebook Connect looks and acts like a phishing site by design?

In other words, this is Facebook screwing up yet again. We should be angry at them, not at their users, because the mistake the users are making is one that Facebook has all but engineered.

I understand the annoyance with Facebook Connect, but this doesn’t explain the facts I find the most amazing in this story:

People google for “facebook login” to log in to Facebook. I understand that they don’t use bookmarks and don’t type in facebook.com, but note that they don’t google “facebook”; they google “facebook login”. Clearly users don’t even see logging in as a function of the site itself; those are separate in the users’ mental maps. This is perhaps partly explained by the excess of websites which use Facebook as their authentication system, but it’s not the whole story.

They then click the small google result which says “News results: ReadWriteWeb” expecting they’ll be taken to Facebook.

They land on a page with an absolutely enormous heading saying ReadWriteWeb, below which is a headline, a byline, and endless paragraphs of what is even at the quickest glance obviously a news story.

They scroll all the way to the bottom of this completely un-Facebook-like page, with not a single thing in the way that would indicate this is a Facebook redesign.

They then go past the big heading saying Leave a comment and instead focus on the small link which says Optional: Sign in with Facebook. And don’t tell me these folks searched for “facebook” or “login” on the page itself.

The amount of information-ignoring necessary to go from 1. to 5. here is just stunning. The degree of faith people put in Google’s top result makes Catholics look like hippies.

I don’t really blame anyone here and I have no clue what the solution is. My only takeaway is that I’m terrified of dealing with technologies of this level of popularity.
